It's Thursday! Each week I look forward to seeing sketches and the layouts that they inspire posted here on the October Afternoon blog. I'm happy to join in this week with a two-column sketch that seems pretty straightforward at first glance, but that allows lots of room for interpretation.
Here's my take on the sketch, using two photos taken on the day of my daughter's graduation party.
The photo in the first column zooms out to capture my mom at work creating lovely mason jar centerpieces, while the photo in the second column zooms in to capture the details of the finished product.
The colors in the centerpieces influenced my color choices on this layout. I started by using a brayer to smooth two columns of paint -- one bright yellow, and one minty green -- across a sheet of 8.5" x 11" white cardstock. Over these two columns, I built the rest of the layout, guided by the sketch.
Using mostly scraps, I incorporated a variety of yellow and green papers and accents from the Summertime, Saturday Mornings, and Daily Flash collections. I even worked in an October Afternoon wild card from yesteryear, trimming it to showcase a row of flowers, which I added to the left column.
Although the sketch doesn't call for a large green bow, I love how the bow adds texture and softens the page, tempering some of the brightness of the yellow.
I would love to see how you make this sketch your own! Be sure to share your projects in the October Afternoon Flickr gallery, and/or if you share them on Instagram, tag me. Happy scrapping!
