Monday Challenge: Speech Bubbles!

Hey guys!  This is Laura Craigie here today with a fun challenge for you!

Speech bubbles are one of my favorite trends, i just think they are ridiculously cute!  October Afternoon has some great products with them, and the new Daily Flash line is no exception.

The idea for my first card started from the telephone "Memory card", and I knew I wanted to use the speech bubble above it not for the sentiment which is the obvious choice, but to cut out some hearts and make a window card.  Then I added a label sticker below the telephone to ground the sentiment for the card.  I wanted the heart windows to stand out a bit more, so I adhered polkadot paper to the inside of the card.  

Here is a detail shot that better shows the peek through hearts in the speech bubble.

I made a second card using the Daily Flash Girl Talk line as well.

It's a sweet simple card, with a more subtle take on the speech bubble.  I used the "She said" Memory Card from the set in the image below, and cut off the top half of it and layered it over the darling bird image from Girl Talk line.  How sweet is that birdie?? :)

The ever sweet Danni Reid joined my in this challenge and made a super cute altered notebook!

I absolutely love the idea of a speech bubble challenge because there are so, so many wonderful speech bubbles in the newest OA lines.  I could've cut speech bubbles from all the lines, or even one paper, and had plenty to fill an entire 12 x 12 page. 

 I began sorting through my various papers, prepared to cut a lot of speech bubbles from various sheets, when i came across this journal card "there is always something to smile about" and an idea was born.  I decided to use that journal card as my starting point an alter a notebook to be used by my daughter as a journal.  I knew the Travel Girl line had the cute umbrella "smile" sticker, so I decided to use the journal card and sticker as my focal and create speech bubbles all over the page that could also "feel like rain"

I love how this journal turned out.  What once was an aged composition notebook, has now become a happy, fun journal for my daughter.  Thank you Laura for such an amazing challenge, can't wait to see what others will create!

Sneak Peek - Silent Night

Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house
Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse;

The stockings were hung by the chimney with care,
In hopes that a Christmas line soon would be there;

The children were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of scrapbooking danced in their heads;

And mamma in her 'kerchief, and I in my cap,
Had just settled down for a long winter's scrap,

When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from the desk to see what was the matter.

Away to the window I flew like a flash,
Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash.

When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But an October Afternoon collection with mice and reindeer,

With warmth and cheer, so vintage and bright,
I knew in a moment it must be Silent Night™.

This collection captures that magical moment before Christmas morning...  The Christmas baking is complete.  The decorations are all hung.  The presents are still wrapped.  And quiet anticipation settles through all.

Thursday Sketch Challenge

Happy Thursday everyone! It's Amy here today with this week's sketch challenge.

I began this project differently than any other sketch I've done. I created my layout first and then created a sketched based on that layout. Usually I create the sketch first, so I thought I would mix things up a bit this time around.

Here is the sketch that came out of it:

It all really started from this large 5x7" print that I wanted to use. The image was so bold and full of life, I really wanted it to be the feature of my page. However, in the sketch you can simply scale down the image or even divide it into two, even three vertical images if you chose to. 

For my papers I used one of the new mini collections from Daily Flash; All Boy. It was ideal for my layout about my little guy, shown here about to dive into the lake with his silly faces that he makes. All of the small cut outs and die cuts from the collection are perfect for the square portions on the left side of the sketch. I even used them for my title work as well. They are so fun!

I asked Jill to join me this week for my sketch challenge and here is what she came up with.

 

Here's what Jill had to say about her project:

Amy's sketch made putting together a layout so easy! I improvised a bit, converting the three squares on the sketch to a six-photo block and making room for the larger photo above them. I also flipped the proportion of space behind the photos -- instead of 2/3 on the top and 1/3 on the bottom, I used 2/3 on the bottom and 1/3 on the top. I added some masked and misted circles in the background, to play up the colors in the photos and create a sense of motion. The papers from the Daily Flash line most definitely are at home on this layout, contributing to its overall energy and vibrancy.
