Vivian here, bringing you this week’s sketch. Today’s sketch is simple, yet versatile. It incorporates a circle element as a significant part of the design, allowing you to put the focus on all those great October Afternoon circle-shaped embellishments. Think tin pins, buttons, circle-shaped word and label stickers, etc. It also allows you to put the focus on one 4” X 6” photo or highlight several photos. Without further ado, the sketch:
First, let’s take a look at what Becky Novacek did with the sketch. Her sweet layout showcases the Modern Homemaker line and incorporates some great stitching detail. Note that Becky layered two circle elements at the top – a label sticker and a tin pin.
My first attempt at the sketch was a pretty literal interpretation. I used papers and a tin pin from the new Rocket Age line. Note that I added a thin strip of grid-patterned paper from the 5 & Dime line to the top of the bottom block so that I’d have a place to house my journaling. One way to interpret a sketch in a fun way is to use patterned paper as the base of your layout. I was able to use a fairly busy large-scale pattern as my base since the elements at the center were either small-scale monochromatic patterns or text elements.
My second attempt at the sketch, using the Fly a Kite line, went in a little bit of a different direction. Instead of using two elements across the center, I included three smaller photos. Instead of a circular element at the top, I cut the ice cream Wild Card in half, rounded the top corners, matted it on patterned paper, and used it as my title element. Fly a Kite stickers and layered Modern Homemaker buttons add interest.
A third attempt at the sketch took the form of a card using papers, stamps, chipboard, and stickers from the Schoolhouse and Report Card lines. I flipped the sketch 90 degrees to the left, switched the direction of the small rectangular element, and added a stitched border around the edges.
The ideas for this sketch are endless: showcase a piece of your child’s artwork instead of a photo, use a circle-shaped label sticker and place your journaling at the top, include a photo collage across the center, add stitching around the edges of each element, etc.
We’d love to see what you do with this sketch! Please share your work using this sketch by posting to our Flickr gallery. Thanks for stopping by today!
