Please help us welcome our December Guest Designer: Malika Kelly! We are so excited to have her joining us this month. Each Friday she will be sharing some of her designs using October Afternoon products.
Hello! My name is Malika Kelly. I am so excited to be October Afternoon's Guest Designer this month. I have been a huge fan of these amazing products since the very beginning…the Hometown and Detours collections! Here is a little bit about me... I am mother to three beautiful kids, Noah 9, Ashton 7, and Piper, 4 and wife to a hard working husband, Andy. We live in central Illinois, but I was born and raised in Toronto, Canada. Before becoming mom, I was teaching elementary school. I have since decided to stay home for my family. I have always been the crafty type, even as a young child. I love to keep my hands busy. I started scrapbooking about 13 years ago, just after we got married…my style has evolved immensely since the days of pictures and stickers! I love documenting my kids' lives with pictures, stories and the funny things they say. I was a 2012-2013 design team member for Bella Blvd, and Chic Tags, Epiphany Crafts, Pretty Little Studio, Paper Camellia and Come On Get Crafty. You can find my creations on my blog at www.malikakelly.blogspot.com or follow me on Instagram, emkay5.
Are you a layout person, a card person, or both?
Oh, I am definitely a layout girl! I make cards when they are assigned to me, but I prefer layouts, both 12x12 and 8.5x11. I like a mini album from time to time too.
What is on your scrap desk right now?
A lot! I keep my go to tools on my desk…Tim Holtz scissors, adhesives, foam tape, tiny attacher, paper piercer, journaling pens… along with any current kits I am working on. My desk is not always the tidiest of places, but I seem to know where everything is. I try to clean up in between projects, but it doesn't always happen. I am not a waster so I have been known to save little bits of paper that I absolutely love!
What is your favorite October Afternoon line or product? Why?
Hmmm… that's a hard one! I have been an October Afternoon fan from the very beginning. I really enjoyed the Travel Girl collection. And I'd have to say that I absolutely LOVE the label stickers. They are always in such great colors and can be used for journaling, stamping or embossing on, adding the date or just layering. I can't get enough of them!
What can you not scrapbook without?
I really like to add stitching to my layouts, so I guess I would say my sewing machine is something I couldn't scrapbook without. I love how stitching is so subtle, yet it adds so much texture to a layout. Sometimes I hand stitch on my projects. Let's say I can't scrapbook without some sort of stitching.
What is your favorite source of inspiration?
Lately, I have enjoyed browsing through Pinterest for my inspiration. I have boards for layouts that catch my eye, color inspiration, graphics that I like or techniques I want to try. I love that I can store the things that inspire me all in one place and then flip through them when I am ready to sketch or create.
What is your favorite movie, TV show, or book?
I love to read, but I just don't get through books very fast. I find I use much of my quiet time planning my layouts. Some of my favorite books are The Help, The Kite Runner, and I Know This Much is True. I am not a big current TV show watcher… but I have found Grey's Anatomy and Private Practice on Netflix. I set up my iPad in my scrapbook room and scrap away to those shows. I can watch back to back episodes while I work and I am still seasons behind!
What is your favorite food?
Usually any type of rice and veggies are pretty satisfying to me. I am not a vegetarian, but there are some days I feel like I could be.
Besides scrapbooking and papercrafts, what do you enjoy during your free time?
Like, I mentioned earlier, I like to read in my free time. I also like to have a simple knitting project to work on for when I am sitting and watching TV with my husband. Nothing too hard, but something to keep my hands busy. I am happy when I am making something. I enjoy running and working out. And of course I like to spend time with my three kids.
If you were a superhero, what power would you possess and why?
I would love to have the power to duplicate myself. I could get so much more done in a day. Even if it were for just one or two hours a day! Imagine what I could accomplish if I could be in two places at once?!
If you could have dinner with anyone, living or deceased, who would it be and why?
All my family lives in Canada and even though it is just a 8-10 hour drive away, we only get to see them a couple times a year. I would love to be able to have a dinner with everyone under the same roof a few more times a year than we do.
I mentioned earlier that Travel Girl was one of my favorite October Afternoon lines. Here is an older layout that I made with it.
I also have a little sneak peek of my December Daily album that I am working on. I am using the Very Merry kit and lots of pieces from the Daily Flash Egg Nog collection.
Here is what I have done with the cover of my Daily Flash album. I made a die cut grid of the numbers 1-25 and slipped a piece of vellum in behind it. A vellum snowflake is layered underneath a Memory Card, sticker label and green seam binding and a button with gold twine tops it off.
And here is a look at my introduction page….
I will have more on this project later! Looking forward to next week!
